Persistent uncertainty by the war in Ukraine, inflation, a tight labor market, and the doubling of interest rates has negatively impacted profitability for many owners. As a result of the economic environment and its implications, more transactions have failed or have been deferred. The increased cost of capital is provoking commercial lenders to become more conservative. This could result in lower M&A volume and pent-up buyer demand in 2023 and possibly over the next few years. Finally, businesses with a stable employee base with low turnover will attract more buyers and could fetch increased valuation multiples.
